BTS THE COMEBACK LIVE: ARIRANG — The King's Return at Gwanghwamun
On March 21, 2026, BTS performed their first full-group live concert in nearly four years at Gwanghwamun Square in central Seoul. The show celebrated the release of their 5th studio album "ARIRANG" and marked the first-ever standalone concert held at this historic public square.
Directed by Hamish Hamilton — known for the 2012 London Olympics opening ceremony and Super Bowl halftime shows — and live-streamed via Netflix to 190+ countries, the event brought together 1,075 crew members, 23 cameras, 50+ backup dancers, and 13 musicians from the National Gugak Center.
The Stage and Its Meaning
The 14.7m open cube stage was designed to frame Gwanghwamun Gate and Bukhansan Mountain as a living backdrop without obstructing their grandeur. Each song's visuals drew from the Korean flag's Geon-Gon-Gam-Ri philosophy, representing heaven, earth, water, and fire.
The opening track 'Body to Body' featured National Gugak Center performers in traditional hanbok playing the Arirang folk melody, fusing centuries-old Korean music with contemporary K-pop choreography. BTS members walked the Eodo (Royal Road) — a ceremonial path historically reserved for Joseon Dynasty kings — from Geunjeongmun Gate to the main stage, symbolically announcing their "king's return" after military service.
