Squid Game Season 2: The Games Return
Squid Game Season 2, released on Netflix in December 2024, continues the story of Seong Gi-hun as he re-enters the deadly games to dismantle them from within. Directed once again by Hwang Dong-hyuk, the season features a star-studded cast including Lee Jung-jae, Lee Byung-hun, Wi Ha-jun, and Gong Yoo. The stakes are higher, the games more brutal, and the filming locations more diverse than ever.
While Season 1 primarily used working-class neighborhoods in Incheon and Seoul, Season 2 expands its scope with prominent locations like Tapgol Park, one of Korea's oldest and most historically significant parks, and Seoul Grand Park, a massive recreational complex in Gwacheon. The game sets were constructed at Studio Cube in Daejeon Expo Science Park, where production designers created elaborate environments inspired by the works of Dutch artist M.C. Escher.
Behind the Scenes
The production team spent approximately one year filming Seasons 2 and 3 back-to-back, beginning in July 2023. The dormitory set features fluorescent OX markings on the floor, illuminated by red and blue LED lights to maximize visual tension. The maze-like corridors are taller and wider than those in Season 1, creating an even more disorienting experience. Seongapdo Island, a privately owned crescent-shaped island, provided the perfect isolated backdrop for the game facility's exterior, though visitors cannot access it. For fans looking to explore accessible locations, Tapgol Park and Seoul Grand Park offer the most rewarding visits.
