Spirited Away: Discovering the Real Spirit World

Hayao Miyazaki's Spirited Away (2001) is one of the most celebrated animated films ever made, winning the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature and holding the record as Japan's highest-grossing film for nearly two decades. The story follows ten-year-old Chihiro, who stumbles into a mysterious world of spirits and gods after her parents are transformed into pigs. To save them, she must work in a grand bathhouse run by the witch Yubaba, growing in courage and resilience along the way.

The film's enchanting spirit world draws inspiration from several real locations across Japan and Asia. While Miyazaki has officially stated that no single place served as the direct model, the visual similarities between certain real-world locations and the film's settings are undeniable. Jiufen in Taiwan, with its winding hillside alleys and glowing red lanterns, has become the most popular pilgrimage site, attracting fans who see the spirit town come to life in its atmospheric streets.

Visiting the Inspirations

The Edo-Tokyo Open Air Architectural Museum in Koganei is perhaps the most directly connected location, as Miyazaki himself has spoken about visiting and sketching the Meiji and Taisho-era buildings preserved there. The museum's traditional facades, particularly the Kodakara-yu bathhouse and the Takei Tokichi residence, show clear connections to the bathhouse design in the film. Ginzan Onsen in Yamagata Prefecture offers yet another dimension of the Spirited Away experience. This remote hot spring village, nestled deep in the mountains, features wooden ryokan inns lining both sides of a narrow river gorge. When winter snow blankets the valley and gas lamps illuminate the scene, it becomes a vision straight out of the film. Each location offers a unique window into the creative world that Miyazaki built, making a multi-stop journey well worth the effort.
